I have
lived in and represented the Spitalfields and Banglatown ward on
the Tower Hamlets Council for many years. As a councillor I worked
with all sections of our diverse community to help those who needed
it. I have
substantial experience within the council and understand the
important role of voluntary organisations, representing your voice
in both to bring about positive changes to our area. I have served
on governing bodies of local schools, housing associations and
committees of several local groups and will work to bring us
improved and affordable housing, better education for children and
a safer neighbourhood. At present I work as a Grants Manager for a
charitable foundation, which works across London tackling
poverty. With this
experience and your support, if re-elected I will help to bring
beneficial changes to our community.

Shelina
Akhtar
I have lived in Tower Hamlets for over 17
years, and as such have experienced the many diverse cultures it
has to offer. I have attended and participated in festivals and
events at the centre of the local community, and as a resident feel
I can represent your concerns and views effectively at council.
Also, by volunteering as a youth worker, supporting young people
aged between 8-19 years from different cultures, backgrounds and
ethnicities and working as an Enrichment and Youth Worker at Tower
Hamlets College, I care deeply about the opportunities available to
young people in our area. I believe that by supporting them and
teaching them valuable skills, we can empower and educate them for
the future. I have also worked for our community as Vice Chair of
Spitalfields and BanglaTown, and have been involved in many local
campaigns to improve parking in the ward, set up youth centres and
create new playgrounds for the future.

Councillor Lutfur
Rahman
Lutfur Rahman has been the Leader of Tower
Hamlets Council since 2008 and a Labour Councillor for Spitalfields
and Banglatown ward since 2002. He still lives in the borough where
he grew up and works as a family law specialist with the
prestigious law firm McCormacks in Stepney. He has been active in
the local community for many years including a 5 year stint as the
chair of Tower Hamlets Law centre and former non-executive director
of Barts Hospital. As a Councillor he was Lead Member for Education
from 2003-5 and for Culture from 2006-7. Under his Leadership, the
Council has invested £20m buying family-sized homes to ease
overcrowding, put 20 new police officers on the streets and
invested millions into new youth
facilities.
