

Cllr. Denise
Jones
Denise Jones has lived in Wapping since
1967 and is married with three children and four grandchildren. She
trained as a graphic designer and a primary school teacher. In 1978
she was a founder of Eastside Arts, a charity offering writing and
reading courses to adults and young people. She has published 20
books of East London history and currently runs an Independent
Bookshop, Eastside Books, in Brick Lane, specialising in books
about East London’s history and culture. She has served as a Labour
councillor for St Katharine’s ward from 1994-2010 and was the
Leader of the Council when Tower Hamlets was rated an ‘Excellent’ 4
star council by Central Government. For many years she has been a
Trustee of numerous Tower Hamlets and pan London Arts, Education
and Housing Boards including Visit London, Arts Council, Rich Mix,
Wiltons Music Hall Trust, V&A Museum of Childhood, Whitechapel
Art Gallery Museum of London, Tower Hamlets Homes. In November 2008 she was
awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of East
London for services to Arts, Literature
and the Regeneration of East London.

Shafiqul
Haque
Shafiqul is married with three children. He
has been engaged in local community and voluntary activity in the
area for the last twenty years. He has worked as a Lawyer
(Advocate) in Bangladesh and in the UK. He has also served as a
General Secretary of the Greater Sylhet Development and Welfare
Council, East London Branch which looks after the interest of
Bangladeshi people in UK. Cllr Haque has represented St.
Katharine’s and Wapping ward as a councillor since
2002. He served as
Mayor in 2006/07 and raised over £55,000 for his chosen charities
Daneford Trust and Tower Hamlets Summer University. In addition he
has served on different outside bodies as a board director
including Tower Hamlets Homes, City Side Regeneration Ltd, the City
Fringe Partnership, Ocean New Deal for Communities), St.
Katharine’s and Shadwell Trust, Tower Hamlets Community Housing,
and Rich Mix Cultural Foundation. Councillor Haque is a qualified
Solicitor and working in a local law firm called ‘Citygate
Solicitors’. He continues to be a member of the GMB and the Society
of Bangladeshi Solicitors in UK.
